With less than three weeks remaining until the start of the regular season, the Texans have been hit with an unusually high number of injuries to their backfield. None of the injuries are considered serious, but it's been enough to cause a shortage of available players during the preseason.
Starter Domanick Davis, who became the franchise's first 1,000-yard rusher last season, has been held out most of training camp with an assortment of minor injuries. He has missed both preseason games with a sore left ankle. Backup Tony Hollings suffered a bruised rib during a 38-3 loss to the Steelers and will be brought along slowly, and third-string back Jonathan Wells is coping with a hyper-extended left knee. The most serious injury to a member of the backfield was a fractured right fibula to Jason Anderson, who was competing for the kickoff and punt return duties.
Because of the lack of healthy backs, the Texans have been forced to sign a couple of free agents, KaRon Coleman and Adam Matthews, to fill out the camp roster.
Hollings picked up a bulk of the workload during the first two games with 29 rushing attempts. He had only nine yards on 14 carries against the Steelers.
The Texans are not overly concerned with Davis' status. He missed most of camp last season with a broken right hand and still was able to take over the starting job from veteran Stacey Mack after the first month.
