Hela Sarana meaning ‘Helping Sri Lanka’ is a UK Registered Charity with special dispensation and specific remit to concentrate its operational activity primarily in Sri-Lanka. The origins of the organization can be traced back to July 1996, when seeds were sown by a group of friends with a common goal and interest decided to form a Sri-Lankan Organization with the aim of lending support to various worthwhile, charitable and humanitarian projects in their beloved motherland, Sri Lanka. From its inception the limited membership worked tirelessly with total dedication and commitment to promote the aims and aspirations of the society to the Sri-Lankan community here in the UK to enhance its membership to facilitate a greater contribution towards worthwhile causes. Our philosophy is not to give money, food or cloths for short-term benefit, but to help people themselves to improve their living standard. Some villagers who live in mud huts and makeshift huts are now in secure homes made of bricks and motor. We are sponsoring income generating schemes such as agricultural/co-operative farms, irrigation tanks and agricultural wells with the involvement of the local community. Education is the key to a future free of poverty. We believe that we can build a strong community by educating children at grass roots level. Hence we utilize our resources largely on educational projects. We are well aware of the health needs of a developing country. We have given some help to Badulla General Hospital and Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle and are considering other health related projects for the future. We select projects and assess them at our regular committee meetings. The projects which benefit larger community are given the priority. Many projects are planned to be carried out in stages and funds released according to the progress made. This way we can keep control of the project and get value for money. Administrative costs and other overheads are kept low and often met by committee members dipping in to their own pockets. |

Hela Sarana has co-coordinators who operate locally in Sri Lanka. They are accountable for funds sent. Our members regularly visit Sri Lanka to assess the progress of the projects. We collaborate with reputable Sri Lankan organizations such as “Shastrodaya Padanama” and the Badulla “Asarana Sarana Samithiya.” and use their local expertise to achieve speedy results in our projects. Hela Sarana has no association with political parties. Hela Sarana has over 200 members to date and numbers continue to rise. The executive committee meets regularly to asses the projects and progress. The AGM is held in August. In 2002 the Charity Commission granted us charity status. We hope to use this opportunity to improve our finances by claiming back tax paid on contributions. Hela Sarana has organized many events not only to raise funds but also to raise the awareness of needs of the poor in Sri Lanka. Many people have given a lot of their time and effort to bring about these events. A concert featuring Pandit Amaradeva was a memorable event among these. Our work relies on the financial support of the people like you. If you haven’t joined us yet, we request you to be a part of those worthy causes by giving a contribution of £5.00 (minimum) per month by standing order (larger contributions are most welcome), and become a member of Helasarana. Even a small contribution can make a big difference. We have also been fortunate to receive significant contributions from some generous supporters. |
